My apartment is too small for any kind of garden but I've had success in the past with pots in the window to grow fresh herbs. has anyone tried raised bed gardens or squarefoot gardening? I can't wait to have a bit of earth to grow things in. How about you? I grew chives, mint, sage, basil, thyme, and taragon. What's blooming in your neck of the woods? Tiffany

Back several years ago I had basically a tomatoe garden.
The tomatoes I would then make my own sauce of, like a salsa.
That area has now grown to be more so like a small woods
and is too shady for the tomatoes to grow.

Must say your herbs sounds tasty

I found this for you, the meaning of the herbs:

Basil = Love
Bay = Fame
Chamomile = Wisdom
Chervil = Serenity
Chives = Usefulness
Dill = Good cheer, Survival

Parsley = Merriment
Rosemary = Remembrance
Sage = Wisdom
Santolina = Virtue
Savory = Interest
Scented Geranium = Happiness
Sweet Woodruff = Humility
Tansy = Hostility
Tarragon=Permanence
Thyme = Daring

I gardened with my grandma when i was a kid, and in the last few years I've really gotten interested in it again. I haven't had a lotof room for a nice garden but have done some container gardening. I don't like it as much as being able to plant in the ground but I've grown tomatos, radishes, and cucumbers. I tried corn a few years ago but I don't think its liked growing in the container I had it in. I want to try the raised bed that might be really cool.

I would love to garden but I kill my silk plants. lol
Seriously though, your herb garden sounds exactly like what I'd like to do.
It seems really overwhelming though.
I found a book called Herb Gardening in Texas though and this thread is inspiring me to read it.

Dreaming more so the what at times seems so impossible

Herbs so many a plentiful
and
my garden is so lacking
One can hope, smiles

Been away from home as far as placing in floral
and the like
Yet been at home all along
Time .. so now the word I am thinking of.. spelling a problemo .. illusive

When we move it's raised beds all the way. Weed and rock free. It's not the same as turning earth and all that but your in charge of everything, all but bugs or small furry critters that think your providing lunch.My mother who kills things in the ground has had amazing success with her raised beds. She's grown everything from tomatos to flowers so if she can do it any of us certainly can.Herbs are very simple to grow especially when started inside. All you need is a sunny window and failing that a uv lamp. They're about 20 bucks at walmart. Get the soil with a 3 month supply of feed in it and all you'll do is water. People make gardening harder than it needs to be, like anything else. How do you eat an elephant 1 bite at a time. Happy summer. Tiffany

Raised beds are either plastic or wood long tubs basically with drainage holes in the bottom. They're anywhere from 4 to 6 feet long and 2 to 3 feet wide. They work well for small yards. Just 2 can yield a large variety of vegetables. Your garden center at Loes or Home Depot would be the best place to get started. They can advise you on soil feeding when to plant etc. Good luck.
